The Just-In-Time concept is the basic methodologies of Kaizen. The Global Kanban System puts it to the test and is an essential tool in achieving an ideal JIT production process. The Kanban system is the engine that propels JIT forward; it offers tools for both production control and continuous improvement to reduce any resource / time / manpower MUDA (waste). Under Kanban, overproducing is a thing of the past, and process manager additionally learn visual tools (signals), to maintain streamlined systems.

Purpose of seminar

The seminar aims to allow participants to learn how to utilize the Kanban system at their Gemba (workplace), and to provide hands-on Kaizen training for participants with actual Kanban . Successful JIT integration can only be achieved with full understanding of the Kanban ideals learned in this seminar.

Who should attend

All employees who have basic Kaizen knowledge and some experience with the Kaizen methodology.

What do I gain from the seminar

    Seminar Outline

Day 1:   Lecture on Kanban System

    Topics

  • Overview of Global Kanban system
  • Problems inherent in ordinary production systems
  • Push and pull production systems
  • How to operate Kanban system
  • Heijunka system that is prerequisite for implementing Kanban system
  •
Day 2:   Interactive lesson with simulation

For better understanding, the following Kanban circulations are simulated.

    1. Flow of Pull Kanban (Inter-process Kanban and Supplier Kanban) and materials between Supplier plant and Assembly plant.
    2. Flow of materials and information using Signal Kanban.
    3. Flow of "leveled" production order after receipt of customer's order.

Participants study exercises in each flow.

Day 3: Hands-on Kanban operation at a plant

Teams are formed of one consultant and several seminar participants. In a workplace (Gemba), each team is given an assignment for Kaizen from a host plant. The participants practically identify the cause of problems existed in the current system and find the solution by exchanging ideas and using actual Kanban. Finally, each team make presentations for the results and our consultants offer comments and suggestions about them.

    Day 4 & 5: Plant Tours

Visit assembly and engine plants of Toyota Motor Co. and suppliers' plants, where Just-In-Time systems are actually performed. You will be able to see how Kanban is managed.
